During the 2003 and 2004 excavations in advance of the New Mexico History Museum's construction, the Office of Archaeological Studies discovered an eighteenth-century circular structure location north of the Spanish presidial barracks behind the Palace of the Governors. Based on the artifacts recovered and features present within the circular structure foundation, it was interpreted as the remains of a carniceria or butcher shop. A recent reappraisal of the structure and its stratigraphy and artifact content has yielded a revised interpretation that enriches and enlivens the history of the structure and social history at the Palace of the Governors in the eighteenth-century.

The Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like skylights on the roof.
