Journey to the Stone Lions

April 24, 2024

Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 12:00 noon, free!

OAS graphic artist Scott Jaquith will present a lecture entitled Journey to the Stone Lions. Scott will focus his presentation on the daylong trek that winds deep into the heart of the Bandelier National Monument's backcountry and discuss the difficult route that leads the visitor through some of the wildest and most rugged terrain in the monument.

Adolph Bandelier was the first American to witness and record the use of the Stone Lions shrine by local Pueblo people in the 1880s. Well into the twentieth century, ethnographers documented the continued utilization of the shrine by affiliated societies for the purpose of ensuring successful hunting. This presentation will feature images from several consecutive years, before and after the pandemic, which will illustrate that the Stone Lions is not just an archaeological site but a modern day shrine still maintained and cared for by local cultures.

This talk, which will only be offered in-person, will be held in the OAS library at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology. Talks are informal and admission is free. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. This talk begins Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at noon. Look for special announcements regarding this and other talks on the FOA Facebook page or on the New Mexico Office of Archaeological Studies website.

The Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like skylights on the roof.
